About US
Background and History
Masvingo Teachers’ College is a government teacher education institution in the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development (MHTEISTD), with a dual mandate to produce primary and secondary school Science teachers. It is located five kilometers south of Masvingo City. The college was established in January 1981 operating from Morgenster Teachers’ College with an intake of 200 students. In July 1981 the college moved to Andrew Louw (next to the present site: the current site used by Great Zimbabwe University) to allow room for freer operations.
The college was offering the Zimbabwe Integrated Teacher Education Course (ZINTEC) on the 1-10-1 model from 1981 to 1987. The first class graduated in December 1984.The college moved to the present site in 1987 and it was officially opened by the then President, Robert Gabriel Mugabe on 15 September 1994. From January 1988 to 2001 and between 2004 and 2010 the college was offering the 3-3-3 conventional model of teacher education. The 2-5-2 model was in operation between 2002 and 2003 and from 2011 to 2018.
In February 2018 Masvingo Teachers’ College was nominated as one of the three primary teachers’ colleges given an additional mandate to train Secondary School Science Teachers. The Secondary School Science Teacher Education Programme (STEP) which started in May 2018 follows the 3-3-3 model. In August 2018 the model of training for the Primary General Course and ECD Course reverted to the 3-3-3 model. Masvingo Teachers’ College is an associate college of the University of Zimbabwe since its inception. It has a valid Certificate of Associateship with the said university with the last inspection done in October 2020
