Secondary Teacher Education Program (S.T.E.P)
Overview
This programme is designed for post ‘O’ level Secondary Science Teachers who can facilitate learning and production of goods and services in the areas of Agriculture, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geography and Environmental Studies, Mathematics and Physics.
Entry Requirements
A student must have 5 Ordinary level subjects including an Indigenous Language, Maths, Science and English (3 years) to enrol for the Secondary Teacher Education Programme (STEP).

The areas offered in Professional Studies include
- Professional Studies Syllabus ‘A’
The subject is compulsory to all secondary teacher education program students focusing on pedagogies
- Professional Studies Syllabus ‘B’
Students learn the methodologies of the main subjects
- Professional Studies Syllabus ‘C’, an area of research
The subject is compulsory to all secondary teacher education program students and students are expected to carry out research in their area of interest preferably in their main subject area.
- Professional Studies Syllabus ‘D’
- Health and life skills (Compulsory)
- Information and Communication Technology (Compulsory)
- National and Strategic Studies (Compulsory)
Students in STEP also do Teaching Practice. While on a yearlong teaching practice stint students are supervised at least three times by their lecturers for at least once a term.
Theory of Education
Theory of Education is compulsory to all those doing the STEP programme and covers three core areas namely:
- Psychology of Education and Inclusive Education
- Sociology of Education and Education Administration and
- Philosophy of Education and Curriculum Studies.

Science
The science subject area covers Biology, Chemistry and Physics
Preferred requirements
A ‘B’ grade or better in science at ‘O’ level, a pass in Physical Science and Biology/ Physics and Chemistry plus ‘A’ level passes in science subjects will be an added advantage.
Course Structure
During first year a student shall do all three science subjects (biology, chemistry and physics) plus methodology. At third year a student shall do Chemistry and either Physics or biology while the methodology remains compulsory
The content coverage in Science Main subjects goes up to first year University level while in PSB students get tuition in the methodology of teaching Science at Secondary school level.
Mathematics
Preferred requirements
To enrol for mathematics major a student must have a pass with a c or better at ordinary level preferably obtained from first sitting. Advanced level Mathematics is an added advantage
Subject requirements
A student should have a scientific calculator and any textbooks in Pure Mathematics, Statistics and Mechanics.
Course Structure
Mathematics is taken as a Double major in STEP. The content to be covered goes up to first year degree level in areas of Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Mathematics Education.
Mathematics PSB
This area is compulsory to all main study mathematics students and the primary focus is on mathematical pedagogies.
Computer Science
Computer science is offered as a double major in STEP
Preferred requirements
A student must have a pass with a B or better at Ordinary level in Computer Science and ‘A’ level Computer Science is an added advantage
Subject requirements
Storage devices (CDs, memory sticks), Laptop, Printer and bond paper, A LAB coat and flat files are necessary for practicals
Computer Science PSB
This is compulsory and the focus is on Geography pedagogies
Geography and Environmental Studies
Preferred requirements
A student must have a pass with a B or better at Ordinary level in Geography. ‘A’ level Geography is an added advantage
Subject requirements
A LAB coat and flat closed shoes will be necessary for practicals
Geography PSB
The focus is on Geography pedagogies
Agriculture
Agriculture is offered as a double major in STEP
Preferred requirements
A student must have a pass with a B or better at Ordinary level in a Agiculture. ‘A’ level Agriculture is an added advantage
Subject requirements
A work suit and Gumboots will be necessary for practicals
Agriculture PSB
The focus is on Agriculture pedagogies
